Jane Hammond: Recent Work

October 20 – November 25, 2006

Press Release

William Shearburn Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by New York artist Jane Hammond.  This exhibition will open with a reception for the artist on Friday, October 20th from 6 to 8 pm and continue through November 25th, 2006.

Through a juxtaposition of literary tropes and fanciful imagery, Hammond’s work becomes a language in itself. Just as in a recurring dream, images of clowns, butterflies, and carnival figures haunt her canvases. This visual vocabulary is as diverse as the combination of materials she uses to create it. Her artistic fluency is inspired by such unusual sources as dictionaries, phrenology, palmistry, beekeeping and tango dancing. Each canvas is an amalgam of vibrant symbols encrypted with information that is both contemporary and historical in scope, making her pieces evocative and aesthetically stimulating. The resulting works reveal a frenetic code that is intentionally left to the viewer to read and interpret.

Over the last decade Jane Hammond has exhibited on both a national and international level. She has had solo exhibitions in Seattle and New York, as well as Spain and Sweden.  A survey of her works on paper, currently on view at Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, will travel to San Francisco, New Mexico  and San Antonio.
