Danny Yahav Brown: Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them

February 17 – March 18, 2006

Press Release

William Shearburn Gallery is pleased to present the work Danny Yahav-Brown in an exhibition entitled, Lies, and the Lying Liars who Tell Them, opening on February 17th and running through March 19th, 2006.

Yahav-Brown’s work toys with notions: the notion of eroticism, of fetishism, of play. His variety of concepts, explored through a diverse and yet refined range of mediums, reveal an almost obsessively focused realization of subjects both seemingly mundane and psychologically complex. Whether Yahav-Brown is examining a city’s relation to pop-iconesque landmarks, or giving dimension and weight to the pain and bewilderment of romantic relationships, his work has a tone of privacy on display. His work functions as a diary of sorts—nonsense writing, brainstorming about concepts, pouring ones hear out—which is then opened and into which the viewer is invited to share. Given the privacy, the personal nature of the realization of the works, the viewer finds himself laughing at or with the artist’s notions, while at other times feels trepidations in approaching the work; embarrassed of either the subject matter or by the idea of seeing something not intended for their gaze.

Unlike most conceptually driven work, Yahav-Brown does not attempt to work in a single vein or medium, rather his concepts dictate the form: his work stems from the analysis of the question or idea. There is an absence of constraint in Yahav-Brown’s work in that however he envisions the piece it is created. This breadth of resources results in works that appear as tempting physical vignettes or simplistic observations.
